Very nice whisky this time. Colour is pale amber to me. Nosing is sweet, fruity, perfumed, floral and licorice after adding water. Tasting is full-bodied, sweet, spicy, citrus and fruity. Finish is very long, citric and fruity. Points: 23+22+22+22 = 89 which is 9-. Very good whisky.

Nice whisky in front of me. Toffee, honey, vanilla and somewhat yeasty features in the nose. When I tasted it I felt more banana fruit notes. Finish is sweet and medium long. Suitable song: Grateful Dead - Morning Dew. Points: 21+21+19+20 = 81 which is a grade of 8.

Grateful Dead

Brilliant! That’s the first word I can dig from my dictionary. I fell in love with GD in 1986 when I borrowed Terrapin Station cassette from my local library in Pori. That song (Terrapin Station) was fabulous. I listened to that many many times. The first side wasn’t bad either, especially Estimated Prophet. Okay, most of the GD studio albums are quite crappy but, man, they rock live. Jerry Garcia’s guitar is perfect, Bob Weir is a brilliant rhythm guitarist, Phil Lesh play some astonishing bass lines, drummers Kreutzmann and Hart are just great and every dead keyboardist have their role in the line. And I like Donna Godchaux’s part in the line-up. GD has allowed their live bootlegs to be seeded, so download as many concerts as possible and enjoy. My favourite GD song? Don’t know. There are many: Terrapin Station, New Minglewood Blues, Bertha, Cold Rain And Snow, China Cat Sunflower/I Know You Rider, Playing With A Band, etc. etc. I wish I could be as good guitarist as Jerry was. That’s just wishful thinking, but even 10% near him? Hopefully. But here’s something you might like:

I just wish I had seen them performing live.

R.I.P. Pig Pen, Keith, Brent, Vince and… Jerry Garcia.

This distillery is not so respected amongst single malt fans but nevertheless this 10 YO tastes good. There are lot worse single malts out there.

The distillery is situated in the Speyside region and it’s typical sweetness and fruitiness are the first scents that comes to mind. Colour is pale amber, not so deep but not light. Nose is sweet, nutty, hint of tobacco somewhere, honey and chardonney. Water surfaces heathery notes when nosing it again. It is medium-bodied whisky with tasting notes like sweet, toffee and honey. Finish and aftertaste is medium long and sweet. Points: nose 21 + taste 20 + finish 20 + balance 20 = 81 points and overall rating: 8.

Nice whisky but still nothing earth shivering in it.

First thing is that I can’t understand why The Beatles were so reluctant to see this recording to be released. They said it was crap. Well, I don’t share their views. This is one helluva live recording. Not from the peak of their Hamburg period but from the last days of their fifth Hamburg visit. According to the notes this was compiled from Ted “Kingsize” Taylor’s recordings from 25th to 31st December 1962. Just before the beatlemania hit the world. Very raw and powerful performance. Much better than the later Beatles live recordings. Oh, how I wish there would be more of those pre 1963 live recordings available.

No one knows the right setlists and what song was played on what day but that doesn’t matter. Here’s one list that claims to be close to real sets recorded:

25th December 1962: 1) Be-Bop A-Lula (vocals by Fred Fascher), 2) I Saw Her Standing There, 3) Hallelujah I Love Her So (vocals by Horst Fascher), 4) My Girl Is Red Hot (incomplete), 5) Sheila, 6) Kansas City, 7) Shimmy Shimmy, 8 ) Reminiscing, 9) Red Sails In The Sunset, 10) Sweet Little Sixteen, 11) Roll Over Beethoven, 12) A Taste Of Honey (incomplete), 13) Ask Me Why, 14) Long Tall Sally, 15) Besame Mucho, 16) I’m Gonna Sit Down And Cry (incomplete), 17) Twist And Shout (incomplete), 18) Mr. Moonlight, 19) Falling In Love Again, 20) Talkin’ ‘Bout You, 21) I Remember You

28th December 1962: 1) Ain’t Nothin’ Shakin’ (incomplete), 2) I Saw Her Standing There, 3) To Know Her Is To Love Her, 4) Everybody’s Trying To Be My Baby, 5) Till There Was You, 6) Where Have You Been All My Life, 7) Lend Me Your Comb, 8 ) Your Feet’s Too Big, 9) Talkin’ ‘Bout You, 10) A Taste Of Honey, 11) Matchbox, 12) Little Queenie, 13) Roll Over Beethoven, 14) Roadrunner

31st December 1962: 1) Roadrunner, 2) Hippy Hippy Shake, 3) A Taste Of Honey, 4) Money (vocals by Tony Sheridan)

Lots of recordings available with different amount of songs. But here’s one with perhaps the most perfect amount of songs + between songs banter:

PS. This is one of the most adored live shows I know. We bought vol 2 of the Pickwick series in 1979 and I’ve loved it since. I remember listening to this when I was a kid. Bloody hell. The best Beatles live show ever recorded. Thank you Adrian Barber & Ted “Kingsize” Taylor. These concerts show what the real Beatles was. Not the polished all-dressed up every mother-in-laws favourite son-in-laws. I want to hear more of this Beatles…

It’s time for an Irish dram: Tullamore Dew Original. Nose has fruity notes with lots of apples and spices. Water brings lacquer. Taste is medium-bodied, fruity and floral. Finish and aftertaste quite short and mild. Not bad whiskey but doesn’t give you any wow-feelings. Nose 21 p, taste 19 p, finish/aftertaste 18 p, balance 19 p. Total points: 75. Rating = 7.5

This is my ongoing project that probably will linger on and on eternally. It will be finished when all the songs can be found as soundboards and without overdubs.

1. Jumpin’ Jack Flash (from Gimme Shelter movie, NYC 28/11 first show)

2. Carol (from VHS version of Gimme shelter movie extras, NYC 28/11 first show)

5. Love In Vain (from GYYYO, Baltimore 26/11)

7. You Gotta Move (from Super/Deluxe GYYYO, NYC 28/11 second show)

10. Live With Me (from GYYYO with vocal overdubs, NYC 28/11 second show)

12. Satisfaction (from Super/Deluxe GYYYO, NYC 28/11 first show)

13. Honky Tonk Women (from GYYYO with possible vocal overdubs, NYC 28/11 first show)

14. Street Fighting Man (from bootleg Shot of Salvation. NYC 28/11 first show)

+ Bonus 1: Gimme Shelter (from bootleg Shot of Salvation, Altamont 6/12)

+ Bonus 2: Satisfaction (from Gimme Shelter movie, extra edits by me, NYC 27-28/11)

The other CD includes supporting acts (Ike and Tina Turner, BB King, Terry Reid, Santana, Jefferson Airplane, The Fabulous Burrito Brothers and CSN&Y). Sadly there are no tapes surfaced of Chuck Berry’s gigs.

This is definitely the best tour by The Stones.

Couple of weeks ago I bought this at local off-license. My last evaluation was quite weak so now I made a new one. Colour is quite bright gold and nice. I can smell malty, honey, nutty and vanilla scents. Medium-bodied whisky. It’s flavours are malty, nutty and melon. Finish and aftertaste is medium and malty and fruity. Points: n 21 p, t 21, f/a 20, b 20. Total points: 82 (grade 8). Good basic whisky. Not bad. A good above average single malt but not particulary great.

Woodstock West? Or just Hell. This was meant to be a great finale of the tour - a free concert for the fans with other great bands with the Stones. Well, Hells Angels weren’t the best choice for the security but afterwards it is too late to change that. This is the concert that is perhaps most written about. And no wonder. One spectator (Meredith Hunter) was killed by Hells Angels during Under My Thumb. Well, it was his fault really. Why on earth he brought a gun to a concert and drew it? Of course the Angels attacked him. But Angels weren’t so clean either. They had punched Jefferson Airplane’s Marty Balin and also hit many fans with pool cues. Well, like one Angel said (can’t remember the exact quote): “if they mess with my bike, they’re gonna get it”. Many say that the troubles were only near the (too low) stage. Most of the 300 000 crowd didn’t even know what happened before the stage. It’s said that it was Gratefuld Dead who suggested The Stones to hire Hells Angels but I think that’s unconfirmed who was in charge. The day started quite badly for The Stones. When they got off the chopper some lunatic fan punched Mick J. Great.

1) CARLOS SANTANA started the festival. He at least played songs Gumbo Jam and Jingo.

2) JEFFERSON AIRPLANE. Marty Balin knocked out by an Angel. A great start to a festival. They played songs: The Other Side Of This Life, 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds, 3/5 Of A Mile In 10 Seconds (restarted), Greasy Heart, White Rabbit, Come Back Baby and Ballad Of You Me And Pooniel. Great set and the last song is marvelous 11-minute jam.

3) THE FLYING BURRITO BROTHERS. They had few nice good moodied songs like Six Days On The Road, High Fashion Queen, Cody Cody, Lazy Days.

4) CROSBY, STILLS, NASH & YOUNG. Neil Young is one of my favourite artists and now he was playing with CS&N. Great songs, like Electric Black Queen, Pre Road Downs, Long Time Gone and Down By The River.

5) GRATEFUL DEAD (Cancelled their act after hearing that The Angels had punched Marty Balin. They said it was too violent and they didn’t want to play. On the other hand it was a wise decision but had they played there wouldn’t have been that long empty period before The Stones came on because Jagger wanted a pitch black atmosphere for them. Another reason for the delay is said that Bill Wyman missed the helicopter ride and came late to Altamont.)

6) THE ROLLING STONES. At last they came on the stage. Sam Cutler’s boring announcement is hilarious. He was obviously pissed off because of the Stones and for the first time he didn’t say “the greatest rock’n'roll band in the world”. First two songs went alright but in Sympathy For The Devil the fights broke and they had to restart the song. BTW, Meredith Hunter wasn’t killed during this song but Under My Thumb. Jagger tried to calm people down by saying cliche hippy lines like: “if we’re all one, let’s fucking show we’re all one”. Perhaps that’s the reason why they also played a nice little mellow tune called Sun is shining. It wasn’t included in the setlist but perhaps they thought it would cool the hotheads. It is also said that Brown Sugar wasn’t first included but during the playing Mick T or Keith suggested Mick J that it would be nice to play that. Gimme Shelter is brilliant version, perhaps the best I’ve heard. Soundboard version of that is included in Shot of Salvation bootleg. All in all, it’s not that bad concert. Cool versions of some songs. Hopefully the soundboard will surface some day (like all the other soundboards of that tour).

So, after SFM the show and the tour was over. Sadly. Fortunately European leg was coming on in 1970. See you in next autumn when I review those shows.

Setlist: Jumpin’ Jack Flash / Carol / Sympathy For The Devil / Sympathy For The Devil (restarted) / The Sun Is Shining / Stray Cat Blues / Love In Vain / Under My Thumb / Under My Thumb (restarted) / Brown Sugar / Midnight Rambler / Live With Me / Gimme Shelter / Little Queenie / Satisfaction / Honky Tonk Women / Street Fighting Man
